Programme Notes

In the long stream of Chinese history, Li Qing-zhao (South Song Dynasty) has always been regarded as one of the most famous poetesses. Born in a family of scholars, she has been well educated since childhood. In marrying literate Zhao Ming-cheng, throughout her life she has devoted herself thoroughly into literature. “The Poetess” is a short cycle that is inspired by poems written in the South Song Dynasty, when most men were sent to military. Like many other works of Li, the poems chosen for this piece show her feeling of missing towards her husband. Li’s loneliness and sorrow is present throughout the whole work.
